Programme Highlights

Engineers never work alone and require high coordination and communication within a team. To optimise the outcomes of a team’s work, team members should understand each other’s attributes and utilise them effectively by a proper task allocation. They should also have decent communication skills allowing them to share their knowledge and experience throughout the team's work, and ultimately achieving their final goals.

This workshop aims to strengthen participant’s skills in team coordination and communication, and to prepare them to be the future leaders. Participants will be split into teams and compete against each other. Similar to a wargame, participants will use airsoft guns to shoot onto others’ bodies to get victory in the game. Participants will have to discuss and develop sound tactics with effective communication skills before the commencement of the game.

Group Sense Development – Tactical Workshop

By LEE Yiu Ting

----------

Engineering is never about working alone. Projects can only be successfully delivered when the team performs in excellent teamwork, well organisation and bidirectional communication. To enhance young engineers’ sense of team spirits and communication skills, group sense development – Tactical workshop was held on 27 Feb 2021.

The commencement of the workshop aimed to understand our roles as a team. The participants were spilt into two group for game arrangements. In the beginning, the participant might not understand their limits and had overlooked their abilities. Tactical planning was not well organised which led an easy loss in the first game. It reflected that all the players were not playing as a team due to lack of communication and planning.

The coach switched the game mode and turned the scope into understanding the opponents and the environment. The participant gained the failure experience in last game and started to share about their strengths and weaknesses to allocate a better position for everyone to perform in their next battle. By analysing points of entry and predicting the reaction of the opponents, tactics like flanking and tactical withdrawal were observed.

As the teams got more experience working together, trust between individuals were formed. Communication on the situation in the game were also enhanced as the teams slowly realized the importance of understanding who were behind the corners can be a matter of staying in the game. Two team members demonstrated their ability to overwatch the situation, formulated different tactical strategies and led the teams to victory.

Last but not least, the workshop ended with an evaluation session. Participants shared their learning outcomes on what they had achieved. Working in an engineering team shared many similarities with the experience in the workshop. Only with effective communication and trustfulness in a team, the projects could be executed smoothly and successfully. The workshop ended in joy, sweats, and appreciation to team work.
