Programme Highlights
As a professional Engineer, professional writing is
a “must” to express ideas clearly and is one of the requirements of HKIE Professional
Assessment (PA). How Engineering
Graduates describe their work duties in the application form is also important
for assessors to evaluate them effectively.
To help Engineering Graduates who will have HKIE
PA, this workshop includes:-
● Examples of topics
● How to structure the essay
● Tips and examples on the PA essay writing
All participants are expected to write a short
article in 30 minutes on a given topic, which will then be marked and emailed
back. Highlight on the newly introduced
competence-based assessment will also be addressed.

ReportBy Mr. Henry LIT
On 28 November 2019, the
Young Members Committee (YMC) organized the professional writing workshop at The
Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Headquarters. The workshop has received a
full house response. The workshop aims to enhance participants on their
understanding of HKIE Professional Assessment and inspire them on ways to
enhance their writing performance. Ir Dr F C Chan, past president of the HKIE, as
well as an experienced engineer and assessor over the years was invited to
conduct the workshop.
After introducing the essay
writing requirement, which is one of the major parts in Professional Assessment,
Ir Chan explained the keys to write a good essay. First, knowledge on the
subject. Every sentence written by the candidate should be 100% certain.
Second, relevance of the answer. Candidate should address the topic with
relevant answer, such as giving historical background related to the topic.
Third, clarity of argument. A well-structured essay with headings and
sub-headings is preferred. Fourth, presentation. Short sentences should be used
instead of complex sentences. Lastly, grammar. Ir Chan reminded attendees to
use active voice and direct speech.
Ir Chan hosted an interactive
game to test the grammar knowledge of the attendees. The challenging questions
raised their awareness on the importance of grammar. In the last part of the
workshop, attendees were given a mock professional assessment on essay writing.
They were given 30 minutes to write 400 words on a given topic to practice their
learnings in the workshop. Ir Chan would return the marked essay to the
attendees after the workshop for them to understand their current state and
areas of improvement.
The workshop was rewarding to
all the attendees as they were able to learn the keys to success on becoming a
Professional Engineer. On behalf of the YMC, we would like to express our
sincere gratitude to Ir Dr F C CHAN for his generous sharing and encouragement
to young engineers.
