Report

By Mr Howard KWOK

In order for our young members to gain global views on the engineering profession, the YMC organised the International Young Engineers Exchange (IYEE) programme with the theme “Gear Towards the Future: Innovative and Sustainable Cities” from 25 to 27 April 2019.

We invited young engineers from seven regions including Japan, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan to share their unique stories in the engineering industry.

To showcase the engineering practice and the latest technology developments in Hong Kong, we organised a series of technical visits. We visited the construction site of a housing development in Diamond Hill to learn about the challenges of construction works in urban area. We also explored the InnoZone by EMSD and tried out the latest technology such as the use of virtual reality. In the afternoon, we received tours at the West Kowloon Cultural District and the terminus of the Express Rail Link and learned about the planning strategies of the cultural complex and high speed railways.

On 27 April, the IYEE Forum was held in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In the first part of the forum, Ir Alfred SIT, Ir Alex KWAN and Ir Vincent TAM delivered speeches on the application of innovative techniques and the keys to gear up towards successful careers. In the second part, representatives from four regions shared their experience in tackling engineering challenges in their home countries with innovative and sustainable solutions. In the subsequent discussion panel, with the real-time online Q&A system, the Chairman of the YMC, Ir Tak TANG and the overseas delegates discussed enthusiastically the questions from the floor regarding engineering challenges and solutions. They also conducted a poll to collect the audience’s opinions towards the engineering industry and their careers. In the afternoon, they had a meeting to discuss institutional affairs and exchanged opinions on the working cultures in different regions.

The IYEE programme was a fruitful three-day event to both foreigner engineers and local engineers. We not only “stepped out” to gained international exposure but also “stepped up” to gear up on the knowledge of innovative and sustainable developments.
