Report

by Mr. KAN Man Lai, Wesley

News on television has always been an important information source to keep us up-to-date in a world full of events. On 24 February 2019, HKIE-YMC had the rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of news reporting on a tour of TVB City led by Mr Yuen Chi Wai, Director of the News and Information Services Division of Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB News).

Mr. Yuen gave a comprehensive tour of the TVB News office while explaining the challenges in news reporting on television, such as the planning of human resources for 24-hour operations and the competition in the industry. Despite all the challenges, he reaffirmed that their first priority has always been reporting news in an accurate and comprehensive manner.

The advancement in technology has greatly helped their work, Mr. Yuen explained. One example is the evolution of video formats, from cassette tapes in to digitalized videos. He expressed that this has enhanced the ease of editing the captured video and ensuring its quality. Furthermore, with the help of technology, Mr. Yuen has realized his vision of turning a television into an informative wallpaper by continuously updating the 24-hour news channel with information of various subjects shown on the screen simultaneously, keeping Hong Kong residents informed about the world in a matter of seconds.

In the TVB News studios, our young engineers tried their hand at being a news anchor while Mr. Yuen shared his views on what it really takes. He raised an interesting point on the appearance of news anchors, explaining that as the viewers should focus on the news instead of the anchors, they need not to be extremely good-looking, but must look trustworthy to the viewers.

The participants concluded their visit with a bonus tour of the film sets in TVB City while listening to Mr. Yuen’s sharing on his exciting experiences in news reporting. Our young engineers actively asked questions and found Mr. Yuen’s sharing on the news and television industry enlightening. Our young engineers gained a deep appreciation for the effort of those bringing the latest news and information to the viewers.
