Report

by Mr Ricky FUNG Tsz Yiu

Pursuit of innovation and change is the only way to maintain the long-term competitiveness and diversification in Hong Kong. Building a world-famed “Smart City” is the development plan to promote high quality of living with innovation and technology. As one of the electricity providers to numerous commercial and residential customers in Hong Kong, CLP Power contributes a lot in the smart meter development to support Hong Kong’s transformation into “Smart City”. It is honorable for YMC to invite Ir C.K. Kwan, Sammy, who is an experienced meter engineer from CLPP for delivering a seminar on “Smart Metering Development”.

“Smart Grid” is different from conventional power grid which delivers power from power plant to customer demand in one direction only. It integrates the two-way digital communications, intelligent devices and power system networks together to advance higher levels of energy efficiency, reliability and sustainability. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and smart metering are the key components in “Smart Grid”. The first technical seminar in 2019 covered the introduction of smart metering and project management skills during the design and implementation stages.

Ir Kwan initially introduced the global trend in smart metering development and the evolution of meter in CLPP. Audience understood more on the difference of working principle between conventional electromechanical meter and smart meter. Two-way communication would be developed between electricity provider and customers. The power utility could enhance the outage detection in order to localize the affected area and the reasons for forced outage. Moreover, every family, company and industry would be encouraged to develop and manage their own energy usage and cost through the AMI in the purpose of achieving energy-saving.

Moreover, Ir Kwan also shared the deployment model for field area network from desktop setup and field survey at design stage to system commissioning for implementation and the challenges his team has faced.

All participants were deeply influenced by the new technology utilizing in our power grid and attractive presentation brought by the experienced engineer. On behalf of YMC, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Ir Kwan for his sharing and insights.
