Programme Highlights
Engineers need to work with different parties from diverse backgrounds, and often, they need to come up with innovative ideas to solve various problems. Apart from the knowledge in their own disciplines, the development of soft skills such as problem solving, communication and teamwork is important and particularly effective and beneficial to young engineers for their career development.
Participants will be provided with a platform to exchange experiences and insights in order to get the best out of the programme as well as to learn from leaders in the industry. By engaging in challenging group-based tasks and activities, participants could breakthrough their usual roles and mindsets to explore and discover their talents and passions. Reportby Mr Anthony YIP
As a platform to nurture young members and encourage interdisciplinary exchanges, the Young Members Committee (YMC) organized the Leadership Training Camp – Breakthrough from 5 to 6 January 2019 at Cheung Chau. Through this camp, participants including students and young engineers reinforced their soft skills, such as problem solving, communication and teamwork, which are essential for their professional development.
On the first day, our young and energetic participants teamed up for a series of ice-breaking games to step out of their comfort zone. After introducing the Institution and YMC to the newly-joined student members, different checkpoint games were assigned to them along the route to the campsite. Each task was designed to enhance their collaboration and cohesion within the team. In the YMC Arena competition, representatives from each group took turn to compete against other teams and participants had a chance to identify their strengths and weaknesses. After 10 rounds of exciting battle, it came to the last programme of the day – Engineers Get Movin’. In this game, different characters were assigned to the participants to raise their awareness on the value of different roles in a team. They could thus experience more about teamwork and the importance of people management and strategic thinking.
On the second day, all participants did the warm up exercise Qigong together to energize themselves. After that, the grand finale of the camp began, which came the activity The Journey of Engineers. Every team was required to complete tasks at different booths namely academics, client, consultant, contractor and YMC. They could step up and have a deeper understanding on their future career path in the engineering industry. Lastly, a sharing session was held for participants to express their thoughts while reviewing their personal breakthroughs achieved as a result of the camp.
Over 40 energetic young members joined Leadership Training Camp – Breakthrough
