Report

by Mr Michael CHAN Man Ho

Mid-Autumn festival is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals of the year. The day falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month which traditionally believed when the full moon is the closest to ground, and Chinese people see the full moon as a symbol of perfection for family. People celebrate the day with family members reunion, appreciating the moon and the mooncakes together.

The Community Services Group of the YMC co-organised a volunteering event with Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service for home visits at Fu Shan Estate. The objective of the visit is to show our care to the elderly and deliver the gift bag with essential items for them to enjoy the festival. The event began with a brief introduction session from their staff, presenting our role of the day, important matters to be paid attention with and the programme of the day. The YMC team was divided into five small groups to ensure all the targeted elderly family could be served on the day.

While the visit took place before the super typhoon mangkhut hitting Hong Kong. The YMC team took special care on the precautionary measures against typhoon in the elderly’s homes and offered help to fix adhesive tape to the windows for those who had difficulties. The team had shown passion and love to the less fortunate through the delivering gift packs and interviews regarding their daily lives.

Through the life experience sharing by the elderlies, the team noticed most of the elderlies would not have the luxury to celebrate the festival with their beloved families, while some with disabilities might even have difficulties to leave their homes. This reflects on how fortunate we are, while we still have health and opportunities to reunite with our families. At the end of the day, the priceless smiles on each of the elderly’s face had paid off the sweat and hard work inputted by the volunteers.

YMC volunteers with the gift packs to be delivered to the elderlies.
