Highlights
Hong Kong is a city with high
density of population from long ago, and clean water supply to the customers
has always been a challenge to the engineer from the past up to now. The first
reservoir was constructed in Pok Fu Lam in 1863 and followed with the Tai Tam reservoir
in 1889 while the Tai Tam Scheme was in fact stated as early in 1872. The total
storage capacity of the reservoir is 8.5 million cubic meter and surrounded
with heritage structures to keep it running. The Antiquities Advisory Board
declared 41 numbers of historic water works facilities within Tai Tam Reservoir
as monuments in 2009.
To know more about the history,
engineering technology and culture behind this heritage reservoir, we are now organizing
a heritage trail at Tai Tam with the professional tour guide from WSD. This
trail will be a 3 hours walk in a Sunday afternoon and the participants can
learn the function and the history of these historic water works facilities,
and the wisdom behind them. After this event, the participants will know more
about the history of engineering in Hong Kong appreciate the heritage in our
own city and enjoy a healthy trail walk together.
