Programme Highlights
Shatin Sewage Treatment Works (Shatin STW) is the largest secondary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong. It occupies 28 hectares of land and serves more than 650,000 residents in Sha Tin and Ma On Shan Districts, which produces 250,000 m3 of sewage every day. Shatin STW was commissioned in 1982 and the treatment capacity was initially 100,000 m3 per day and was increased to 200,000 m3 per day in 1986. To meet the continuous population growth in Sha Tin and Ma On Shan, the Stage III Extension was commenced in 2001. The treatment capacity of the STW was increased to 340,000 m3 per day after the completion of works. An ultraviolet light disinfection system was also installed in the STW in 2010 in order to improve the effluent quality.

The visit will cover six major steps in sewage treatment process:
1. Screening and Degritting
2. Primary Sedimentation
3. Secondary (Biological) Treatment
4. Final Sedimentation
5. Sludge Digestion
6. Sludge Dewatering

Moreover, how to act proactively in an environmental manner and to provide a better service to the nearby residents is also the objective of Shatin STW. The visit will also include the introduction on environmental protection in the STW and relocation project of Shatin STW to caverns.
