Technical Visit to Hong Kong Science Park

Programme Highlights
Hong Kong Science Park is spearheaded as a complete innovation and technology base camp for R&D, testing, fund-raising and commercialization. Whatever a company’s area of expertise – from robotics to renewable energy to pharmaceuticals – Science Park provide world-class infrastructure for tech start-ups and companies. Science Park is still expanding. SPX1 will be completed in 2019 to provide two more smart buildings with automation, IoT and smart systems, which will help accelerate the development of the “Smart Region” at Science Park. A planned new building, InnoCell, is designed to encourage tech talent to gather, exchange ideas and enjoy the convenience of conducting R&D work where they can also take a respite.

The visit includes an introduction of the sustainable design strategy of Hong Kong Science Park, followed by an onsite visit to the adopted innovative green features and technologies.

Hong Kong Science Park (HKSP) is an important and strategic hub for technology start-up and companies to conduct innovative Research and Development (R&D) work and business. The captioned technical visit was conducted on 29 Dec 2018. 

After a warm welcome by the tour guide from Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporation (HKSTP), the tour started with an exhibition of the father of fibre optic communications, Professor Charles K. Ka, achievements. His great accomplishments were presented in an auditorium building named after Professor Charles K. Kao.

The showcase included Prof. Kao's “ground-breaking achievements in the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication.” which received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics. Meanwhile, the display boards also introduced the physical theory, multiplexing and applications of fibre optics. One of the interesting applications of fibre optic is the fibre optic sensors adopted in real-time all-weather monitoring of bridges and railroads. Comparing to traditional electronic sensors, fibre optic sensors could withstand lightning, humidity and other climate factors. It could also accurately detect the change and deterioration of structure integrity, so it could be used for safety monitoring of civil infrastructures effectively. 

The visit was followed by a tour along the Green Trail which demonstrated the applications of some pioneering green design ideas in HKSP Phase 3. 17 selected green building design features were introduced, including rainwater recycling system, natural light optimisation glass, solar tracking louvers, solar cooling water wall, high-performance façade and vertical green wall, etc. These features would not only save energy, but also provide a comfortable working environment for the tenants in HKSP Phase 3.

The participants appreciated the efforts HKSP spent on implementing green technologies in order to demonstrate that Hong Kong is possible to adopt more green features in building designs. On behalf of the YMC, we would like to thank HKSTP for providing this fruitful visit.
