Report

By Ms Eunice YUEN

In the early morning on 2 Dec 2018 (Sunday), 25 young members gathered at the Sai Kung Public Pier, waiting for embarking to the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

While sailing, the Accredited Geopark Guide (A2G) explained the definition of a Geopark, highlighting Sai Kung enjoys a significant coverage and scope of geoheritage.  The A2G moved on explaining the main features of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, including diversified ecological habitats and wildlife, along with a strong foundation in ecological research and vast experience in the promotion of nature conservation.  Sooner, the boat reached the Jin Island (吊鐘洲) featuring sea caves and sea arches.  The group then excursed to the Ung Kong Group (甕缸群島) which was famous for the unique and magnificent sea stacks.  At about noon time, members found themselves at the High Island (糧船灣) for a decent seafood lunch, followed by a leisure hike on the island, exploring the Hakka traditions as well as the scenic Pak Lap Wan (白腊灣).

Apart from the stunning views, High Island is also famous for the internationally rare acidic polygonal volcanic rock columns. These volcanic rock with columnar joints, formed about 140 million years ago, is a type of acidic rhyolite-dacite porphyroclastic lava. It is rich in potash feldspar and quartz phenocrysts.  The reason for being hexagonal is related to the stress concentration – after the lava came out, joints or cracks would form on the surface during cooling, and extend perpendicularly to the bottom of the large depression.  The cooling lava, or eventually becoming rocks, are contracting not only perpendicularly, but also towards the centre of the surface, forming hexagonal columns.

The group descended to the boat again and headed along the coastline of the High Island Reservoir.  While enjoying the breeze and sunset, some historical background and knowhow on constructing the west dam of the reservoir were covered by the A2G.  Despite some occasional rough sea condition, all the participants loved the visit.
