Report

By Ms Rachel NG

Apart from the annual One Day Seminar organized by the young groups of 5 professional institutions namely the CIArb, CIBSE, HKIE, HKIS and ICE, various social and recreational events were also organized throughout the year to promote networking between our members and other professionals in the construction industry.

In light of the above, a handmade candle class was held on 11 August 2018 with a total of 15 participants. Participants first selected the mould in the shape of pyramid and half sphere that they wished their candles to have. The wax used in the workshop is called Jelly Wax, which has a translucent appearance and a jelly-like consistency. Miss Catrina Cheng, the tutor of this workshop, first started to melt the Jelly Wax until it reached a certain temperature which was capable to form its shape in the mould. In the meantime, participants picked their preferable glitter, dyeing powder and fragrance oil in the scent of lemongrass or ocean to enhance the candle’s appearance and sensation. Afterwards, the melted jelly wax was poured into the mould and was further mixed with selected dyeing powder. While the wax took time to cool, the participants had a good time to chat and develop some bonding. After around 20 minutes of cooling, the candle was closed to be completed with the last steps being demoulding and adhering the wick to the candle.

By the end of the class, all participants returned home being satisfied with the candle that they designed and made, and most importantly, the new friends that they made.
