Chairman’s message
I am truly honoured to be elected as the Chairman of the Young Members
Committee (YMC) for Session 2021/2022.
In this fast-changing world, things transform quickly, especially the
impact of COVID-19 speeds up the digital transformation. Not only does the advancement bring changes
and challenges to the engineering industry, but also it changes our way of
life, the way we work and the way we collaborate with others. When we talk
about how to face challenges, in the past, we usually talked about resistance and
resilience, that is, our ability to absorb the damage and recover. Nowadays, with innovative minds, and high
flexibility and adaptability, young engineers are able to share their thoughts
and ideas, and take up the leader’s role to bring about change. To this end, I have chosen the theme of my
chairmanship for the Session 2021/2022 to be “Be the Change. Lead the Change.”
Changing others or surroundings may sometimes be difficult, as embracing
unknowns and tackling something we are not familiar with can be daunting. The only things we can do are to change how
you think about the situation, how you feel and what attitude you will take when
tackling challenges. Through the change
process, one will acquire opportunities, experience and improvement, and at the
same time influence and inspire the others around him. The real change will
come when we go within ourselves and bring about inner transformation. In this
session, YMC will continue to provide support and chances for young members to
explore and improve themselves, get inspired and contribute in leading changes
in the Institution and the engineering industry.
Finally, I would like to take the quote from Mahatma Gandhi “…If we could
change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man
changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him…”.
